Yes. Ductless mini-split configurations allow you to create ‘zones’ throughout your home, and you can individually control the temperature in each of these zones. For example, if you’re entertaining in the living room and kitchen, turn down the AC there, but leave the rest of the house as-is. The key benefit here is energy savings: you’re not having to pay to cool or heat the entire home, just parts of it!
Ductless mini-splits feature several indoor ‘blowers’ connected to a single outdoor condenser. These wall-mounted blowers distribute cooled or heated air into each of the rooms by fanning air past cooled or heated refrigerant. This refrigerant then cycles through other systems and back outside, changing its temperature by either absorbing heat energy or releasing it. This cycle continues until your home’s at the desired temperature. It’s the same principle that heat pumps work off of.
Generally speaking, ductless mini-split systems cost about 30% more than traditional, forced air HVAC systems. However, there are some important considerations. First, a ductless system both cools and heats the home, so there’s no need for a separate heater and AC unit. Second, if your home does not currently have ductwork, ductless systems are far less expensive than installing new ducts. Finally, ductless systems are so efficient that they’ll eventually pay for themselves over the years.
