Add an EV Charging Station to Your Home

Take a drive on the I-25 and count how many electric vehicles (EVs) you see on the road. In the past few years, EVs have really taken off. Whether you own an EV or you’re planning on buying one in the near future, you should have Wagner’s electricians upgrade your home with an EV charging station.

Here are just a few reasons why you should have us install an EV charger in your garage or carport.

The perfect partner for your new electric vehicle.

A home charging station allows you to charge your vehicle while it’s parked at home, eliminating the need to spend time waiting at a public charging station. We can upgrade your garage’s electrical circuit to accommodate a Level 2 charger, which is capable of charging most vehicle batteries to full capacity in just 4-6 hours.

You can set your vehicle to charge overnight so that you can take advantage of the lower price of electricity in off-peak hours. Then, when you leave for work in the morning, the battery is fully charged and ready to go!

Add long-term value to your home.

Electric vehicles are the future, and that future will be here sooner than you might think. As battery technology improves and EVs become less expensive, more and more people will be making the switch from gas to electric. This means homes with built-in charging stations are going to be in-demand.

Upgrading your electrical circuit now to accommodate an EV charging station will add long-term value to your home. With our growing tech sector, Albuquerque and Santa Fe are on their way to becoming EV-friendly cities. Even if you don’t own an electric vehicle today, adding a charging port is a great investment in your home.

Have Us Set Up Your Charging Port

EV charging station installation services

Level 1

A Level 1 charging station uses a standard 120v circuit, and often comes with your vehicle purchase. This charging station takes 8-12 hours to charge your vehicle. Talk to us about adding a circuit.

Level 2

This is the setup most EV manufacturers recommend. With a 240v circuit, your vehicle will fully charge in 4-6 hours, making a Level 2 charging station a great fit for busy, on-the-go families.

Electrical vehicle home installation

Level 3

Tesla recommends homeowners use their home wall connector with a 240v circuit (Level 2). Our electricians can help install this circuit in your garage, along with the  wall-mounted charging station.

Direct Or Portable: What's the Difference?

Direct Wire

Also known as a ‘hardwired’ setup, a direct wire EV charger is exactly what it sounds like: a wall-mounted charger with a reel-driven cord that connects to the charging port on your vehicle.

A direct wire charger runs off of your home’s electricity and needs to be installed by one of our licensed, experienced electricians. Outside of occasionally ‘filling up’ at charging stations on longer trips, your home’s direct wire charging station can be the main way you power your vehicle’s battery.

Portable

Think of portable EV chargers as the equivalent of your home’s backup generator. These chargers, typically compact enough to be carried in the car or stored in the garage, use gas to generate electricity to charge the car.

They’re not meant for full-time use, or even fully charging your car when they are used. They’re useful if you either run out of charge while driving or there’s a power outage at your home and you need to give you vehicle enough juice to get around.

Customize Your EV Charging

Circuit Panel Upgrade

A Level 2 charging station requires a 240v circuit. In most homes, this means our electricians must add a new circuit and upgrade your circuit panel. Give us a call to learn more about this service.

WiFi Systems

Many EV charging ports come with WiFi integration, allowing homeowners to see the status of their vehicle charging from just about anywhere. Call us to learn more about your options.

Pedestal Kits

Not all EV charging stations are wall-mounted. Some homeowners prefer a pedestal setup, with the charging port in the center of their garage. This is useful if you’re charging two EVs at once.

Here's What You Need to Know

Do I need a permit to add a home EV charging station?

Yes. Many municipalities here in New Mexico—including the cities of Albuquerque and Santa Fe—require homeowners to file a permit prior to starting circuit installation, and then schedule an inspection ahead of project completion and turning the power back on. The certified electricians at Wagner will handle this entire process, from start-to-finish, ensuring your circuit upgrade and EV charging station installation is done correctly and up to code.

Does my garage need its circuit upgraded?

Most residential circuit breakers are set up for 120v outlets. Accordingly, the circuit is a standard 20-amp circuit. The 240v outlet needed for a Level 2 charger requires a 40-100 amp circuit. Unless your home’s current breakers were installed with this amperage in mind—uncommon even in new builds—we’ll likely need to add a new breaker capable of transporting all that energy safely to your electric vehicle.

Will I need a new breaker box?

Most residential circuit breakers are set up for 120v outlets. Accordingly, the circuit is a standard 20-amp circuit. The 240v outlet needed for a Level 2 charger requires a 40-100 amp circuit. Unless your home’s current breakers were installed with this amperage in mind—uncommon even in new builds—we’ll likely need to add a new breaker capable of transporting all that energy safely to your electric vehicle.

Is this a project I can do myself?

No. If you’re planning on adding electrical vehicle charging to your home’s garage or carport, you need to talk to a licensed and experienced electrician first. Even a Level 1 charger can trip breakers if it’s too much for the circuit to handle. To get the electrical draw needed for a Level 2 charging port, a professional needs to install a new circuit and, likely, new breakers. Doing this safely and effectively requires proper permits, tools, and expertise.
