Do I Need a Backup Generator?

Here in Albuquerque, we’re no stranger to thunderstorms—and the rolling blackouts they can cause. All it takes is one fallen tree to knock down a power line, leaving your home without power for hours or even days.

In that time, the food in your fridge and freezer will spoil. Lights and security systems no longer work. In summer, your home will rapidly heat up; in winter, your pipes are at risk of freezing at night. Life in your home comes to a sudden, screeching halt, and you’re at the mercy of the utility company. With a standby generator, you can ensure your home’s safety and security when there’s a power outage, severe winter storm, or other adverse event.

Everything You Need to Know About Generators

How much power do I need?

In an emergency, you at least need enough power to keep essential appliances (your fridge, freezer, range, and water heater) running, along with your HVAC systems. Talk to our team about the output of different generator models. While some are only capable of providing basic backup power, other, more powerful systems can generate additional power for your home. This is especially useful if multiple people work from home, and will need uninterrupted power for computer and internet use.

Do I need to fuel it up?

Most home generators are connected to the property’s natural gas line—the same line you use to power your water heater and range. Because of this, they do not need to be refueled, and they’re capable of running for as long as there is natural gas flowing to your home. If your home does not have a gas line connection, there are also diesel generators available. These systems would require refilling before an emergency. Gas generators also exist, but are less common for standby generators.

Do I need to switch it on?

We install both standby (automatic) and manual backup generators. As their name implies, standby generators are designed to power on when the system detects the loss of grid power. Manual generators, on the other hand, must be turned on when there’s an outage. While standby generators often cost more to install, most homeowners prefer them, since they ensure your home receives power even if you’re away from your home when the outage happens. Talk to our team—we’d be happy to review your options.

How long will my generator last?

Most in-home generators are built to last, and designed to run in relatively short spurts. After all, a vast majority of blackouts only last about 24-48 hours. Under these conditions, good backup generators should last 20-40 years. If you would like a generator that can reach this lifespan, purchase a high-quality generator with a water-cooled engine, and make sure you get it maintained by a generator electrician every year. Our team is happy to perform this service.
